Adventures in Peru
The
great geographical diversity of Peru also gives the chance of enjoying it in some other
different ways: Mountain Climbing, Skiing, Hiking, White River Running, Kayaking,
Paragliding, Biking, etc. are some of the many choices that tourists from all over the
world take in Peru. The most famous places for Mountain Climbing and Hiking are found in
the Ancash region that has the Huascaran, the highest mountain in Peru which summit is
about 6,770 meters above sea level. Around that region are also the White and Black
Cordilleras (ranges of mountains) where people also practice skiing.
Around Cusco in the southern Andes Mountains are the famous Cordilleras of Vilcanota
and Vilcabamba that are excellent for Mountain Climbing and Hiking.
The most famous short hike in Peru is the Inka Trail in order to get Machupicchu; the
whole trek takes from 3 to 5 days depending on where it is started. The attraction of the
Inka Trail is in the environmental scenery you can get; there are places over 4000 meters
where there is not so much oxygen and the flora is scarce, but after half an hour of
walking you will be able to get a semitropical environment in the rain forest. But the end
of those hiking days, as a prize for your efforts you will get the marvelous Machupicchu.
There are also some other famous hiking areas such as the Salkantay and Ausangate
Mountains and the Cordillera of Urubamba in the Cusco region.
White Water Rafting is another widespread practice in the rivers of the inter- Andean
Valleys; the most famous areas are in the Urubamba River in Cusco, the Apurimac River in
Apurimac, the Colca Canyon in Arequipa, the Ancon River in Lima, and the Santa River in
Ancash.
